THE PROMISE

I came
from the unknown
as a baby first wrapped
in promise to a world in need
then wrapped in swaddling cloths
greeted by men
with love

I learned
as I became
changing, finding, growing
a rebel in the tribe of time
struck by visions of truth
that showed me why
love burned

Matured
I worked through dust
adhering to the law
as I cleared the clouds of chaos
  refining my methods
I then prepared
for love

Espoused
the covenant
beyond new horizons
metamorphosed I transcended
escaping excuses
you will find me
through love

  1. One of your best, Gay. (And I say that as a complete pagan atheist /smile ) Some really compressed, heady verses, with superlatively engaging lines, like 'rebel in the tribe of time.." all proceeding with grace and impact to the masterly neat close. Just excellent work.

  2. i like that you describe him as a rebel in the tribe of time..there is a song about jesus i LOVE and it goes: down from the sky, he came like an undercover spy...a dangergous man for a dangerous time...that's what he was and is..and i just love your poem gay - great you're around - i could kiss you right now...smiles

  4. Thank you ... I wrote it last night prior to the eclipse. I wrote it in the same form as I wrote the picture prompt poem on Beachanny's Texas which was syllabic count 2, 4, 6, 8, 6, 4, 2. I have no idea what it's called so if anyone knows I'd appreciate it. I like the teardrop sort of shape of it too. I wanted it in four parts--symphonic and cardinal points, four humours, four seasons...etc. But most of all wanted to celebrate Christmas and wish you, my friends, Peace now and in the New Year.

  10. nicely penned, but i was admiring the form... like Rictameter but building up to an 8-syllable line and waning back to 2, rather than the full 10? Does this have a name, or is it simply a variant of Rictameter? Have you tried it left-aligned? I think this is nice because the stanzas look a little like falling snow. Or stars to guide us... or christmas lights... have a great Christmas/Solstice Gay, and come play on our Board sometime. We never close...

    Warm regards

  11. "Struck by visions of truth
    that showed me why
    love burned"

The experience of love not only reveals personal verities, but also connects lives. A beautiful holiday poem about the progression of life experience. Warm wishes for a wonderful Christmas, Gay :)

  15. Your third stanza is my favorite, but like others, it's the form that really catches me. Beautiful.

  17. This poem evolved in a new way for me. I had an idea--philosophical based on a rather pessimistic quote of Schopenhauer about the origin and destiny of man but it quickly realized itself into this about the promise of salvation through love. I liked the form. I hardly think I invented it; but I don't know its name. I like its shape though. Thank you for taking time in busy lives to read today. Much appreciated.

  21. @rallentanda - hypocrites seem more hateful to me with each passing year. Thank you for coming to comment. Happy holidays.

  25. I was going to quote parts of this poem, but there is so much in there that resonates, I would have to quote it all and well, that would be pointless.

I have wrote about similar concepts in my own poetry, rebels, love, chaos, metamorphism, struck by truth, Time, etc. So many concepts, that tell me that you have travelled on the same path that I too travel.

    Have a lovely Christmas.

  26. Try Rictameter - you'd love it - 2-4-6-8-10-8-6-4-2 ... nice left or centre-aligned. But with Rictameter, the first and last lines must be identical.. I love that repetition element.

  27. This part is my favorite:
    "I then prepared
    for love

    Espoused
    the covenant
    beyond new horizons"

I had never thought of Christ's death on the cross as a marriage to the covenant. It gives me a new perspective. This poem is beautiful and breathtaking!

Thank you for the visit and Happy New Year!

  28. I love this, especially the last stanzas. You have taken a subject that is so over-done as to be a walking cliche, and you've made it your own. Stunning piece!
