Dragonfly Caprice

Green Dragonfly (public domain)

He lifts in a jeweled grazioso
afterwards he hovers above the leaves.
His iridescent wings ostinato
when he flashes an allegro reprise  --
darts lively, then dizzily starts to weave
dazzling con fuoco designed cadenzas
marked next by his rallentando segues
ending in opalescent mazurkas!

  4. I often think that dragonflies and classical music go well together (my husband will play it on the outdoor speakers and we do get a lot of dragonflies as there is a lake nearby :) Nicely and musically done. (I liked the simple "darts lively", as it reminds me of my old chorus director saying "lively, now, LIVELY!" :)

  15. Oh, my, this is so impressive. I have enough trrouble with everyday words, and here you are, pulling off a musical example of a huitain with these. Brava!

  17. Oh, this poem did sing, for sure. We have lots of dragonflies, and every one is unique. Your description of this insect and its "dazzling" moves was orchestrated top to bottom. Masterful! Amy

  23. O the magical music in this portrait of a dragonfly! As if this little creature creates and is his own music! Delightful!

  24. amazing! i love the word 'grazioso'- in fact- there are so many words here ive never heard of but the whole poem captures that flitting playful inquisitve nature of the dragonfly- expertly done!

  27. It looked like a ritual or was it a dance of happiness. Dragonflies in flight can be most mesmerizing. Nicely written,Gay!

  28. The musical terms really enliven this little dance, Gay, give it depth and make the poem a visual jazz piece. We have many dragonflies here, including some with double white-tipped wings (like little biplanes)whose movements are joyfully and amazingly like what you paint. Beautiful flawless form, and really satisfying poem.

  31. Dragonflies are some of my favorite creatures, though I think the ones I'm used to are a bit more sedate than yours. :-)

  32. You poem (and, for that matter, dragonflies) have such a hypnotic effect. They are beautiful creations and the huitain suits them well. I have a book on American Indian totems and it has the dragonfly as a symbol of illusion. When I see one, I ask to be free of illusion. Kind of a great reminder.

  33. positively beautiful. I can hear the music, feel its pulse in time with the dragon fly.
