Sonnet For a Granddaughter

Ashley Elizabeth Old

For Ashley

Your face, sculpted as from rose quartz.
Sun sparkles bounce off you as you move;
your dress, feather light, barely touching your skin.
Your hair softly brown, flows like music in the wind.

Your rhythms dance allegro
leaving a shadow of melody as you depart.
Only a trace scent of lilac and lavender petals
track the places where you've been.

I close my eyes and  think of you; I am young
like you.  The world is fresh, ever-changing;
a sea of tomorrows we are meant to explore.

We fly through forests of cherry trees,
we sleep under canopies of silk;
we dream peace flourishes and hopes succeed.

  3. Thank you both for your comments and for reading. She turns seventeen (17) today and yesterday I celebrated seventy-one (sigh) 71 - it's our palindrome birthday!

    1. Thanks - it's the place for the volga. It's not any of the traditional sonnets but fashioned after Neruda's. Without form yet still in fourteen lines. Appreciate your comment!

  7. A beautiful poem for a beautiful girl. And I also hear you when you say

    " I close my eyes and think of you; I am young
    like you. The world is fresh, ever-changing;
    a sea of tomorrows we are meant to explore."

    Time passes way too fast, WAY too fast.

  11. A very pretty poem for a very pretty girl. She is like rose quartz only so much softer. I especially like your last line in which the verbs like flourishes can almost be read as nouns. So interesting. Thanks. Glad you are settling back into your writing life. K. (This is Karin - Manicddaily. wordpress.). k.
