Aubade For Anna

Ladies Layback  by © Gay Reiser Cannon  All Rights Reserved

You skate a morning song of winter's ice,
a dazzling dancing line of melody.
Your face of joy, as bright as sunrise
Brings warmth and smiles to everyone you see.

Through form and method, lessons taught for years,
awake in you a pure simplicity.
Your grace, achieved through aches and many tears.
revealed in small degrees of clarity.

Hungry for your day long learning
Eager for the feel of things unseen
Needing practice, you give understanding
To all you find who want or need.

Tracing crystal edges into songs of eloquence,
you freeze your classic beauty into rhapsody.

  2. Ah yes - the Queen - Yuna Kim or in her country Kim Yu-Na. Many argue she should have the gold medal (for the second time) - she was beautiful. She and Mao Asada of China also returning for the second time - who made mistakes in the short but pulled up to 6th from 16th in the long which was exquisite. The girl who won did extremely difficult maneuvers (from Russia - Adelaina Soltznikova) but didn't have the elegance, grace and finish of these two skaters nor the lovely girl from Italy, Carolina. She skated the beautiful short to Ave Maria.

  3. smiles....i can feel her excitement...which is probably what was as infectuous as that joy...or maybe the cause of the joy...that last couplet is beautiful....the song and the rhapsody.....the awakening within her as well....some nice layers of her in this....

  5. My wife has convinced me to watch, and care about figure skating; especially the couples; can't wait for the new reality show, SKATING WITH THE STARS; your poem captures so much character & grace; great use of the prompt.

  6. First I'm so happy for the joy you paint on the young skater.. i have understood it's also extremely challenging and also quite competitive as well..not having any children of my own, i know others who spend an immense amount of time exercising... it takes a lot of sweat and pain too I assume... loved the sonnet meter too.. very nice.

  7. I think that reality show came and went, Glenn. Yes I love ice dancing - it was my son's favorite discipline - he said having a partner calmed his nerves. The dancers get ice at night in most places. They arrive at the rink @ midnight and skate until 4 a.m. It's quite grueling with at least an hour spent on strength and speed exercises before they work on choreography and synchronization. Watching practices never gives you the pleasure watching the others (pairs and singles). They always complete programs, skate jumps and spins. The dancer do 6 or 7 steps repeatedly and then go to the next 6 or 7 - exhausting just watching.

  8. "innocence we learn in stages" - interesting line...usually we lose innocence in stages, so that contrast to the normal was really powerful. Beautiful picture too!!
