FOXTROT

Sailing on a caravan of dreams she moves
Slick as silken notes and satin seams, and leans
Into muffled muted notes that box her dreams
Of furs and pearls and steamy nights.
His steps designed as accents bright
Seem stolen from the mirrored light,
Exposing looks that bounce, reflect and glance
Off languid partners as they dance.

Turns and twists and passing rolls
      Indiscretions now unfold in movements
      Both elegant and controlled.
The mixing scents of flowers and rare spice
Jazzy secrets unwrapped in indigo and teal
Transform the dance in form and feel,
      Until it seems they glide
      Upon a measured turning wheel—

Where dreams are spun into a moment real.

  1. Oh my...she moves on that dream-caravan, which become momentarily real. You are certainly a romantic--possibly a dancer--to know those feelings she is experiencing.

What a fine poet you are, Gay!

    And I love these words:
"...Turns and twists and passing rolls
    Indiscretions now unfold in movements
    Both elegant and controlled.

You are good painting with language, girl!

    PEACE!

  12. Thank you everyone. As you may know I'm a figure skating judge and have watched hours and hours of dance on ice. Sometimes a couple does such an amazing poetic job that it moves you to words. This was my attempt to match such a performance in words. Glad you felt the dance. Nothing's sexier than a well danced foxtrot. My gratitude to you for coming by to read. My great respect to all of you for your work as well.

  13. I love the first stanza (Really) - it almost stands on it own -- love the flow of its words, the "muffled, muted notes that box her dreams" very nice rhythm as the dance...bkm

  16. Stunning images here, Gay. I like this poem very much.

I'm reminded of a play I saw years ago, Grand Hotel, I think. As the play progressed, off to the side of the action were two tango dancers dipping and swaying, looking very much like your photo above.

  22. beautiful poem...very descriptive in how you use dance as metaphor for emotions, real life burning underneath our apperances, actions.
"Into muffled muted notes that box her dreams" powerful line...
and then the ending: "Where dreams are spun into a moment real." Perfect. great one shot

  33. The name foxtrott doesn't suit the way you have described this dance. You have a way of renaming a trott. May I have this dance m'lady?

    ReplyDelete
  34. oops...the extra 'T' in trot was for emphasis

  35. I've always wanted to learn the Argentine Tango! This piece has more of the Tango feel than a foxtrot,to me. It's a great piece. I saw that you commented about feeling in a slump. I know that feeling. I hope you keep at it!
